February 17th marks the start of the Chinese New Year. A time of new beginnings, of optimism but also great suffering for the many animals who will be slaughtered for the weeks of feasting.
It’s still bitterly cold in China and every morning at our shelter we have to smash through the ice to access water. Roads aren’t easy to drive down but we continue to be vigilant and rescue where we can.
The night before the new year we were coming back to the base when we encountered a small truck. We immediately saw a bundle of little eyes and paws in the dark. In total 8 rescues. 6 puppies and two cats. The local man had rounded them up from villagers and was on his way to sell them to the local dog meat restaurants.
We managed to grab them and took them to the hospital. 4 have distemper and one needed an urgent blood transfusion. It was heartbreaking such tiny souls weighing so little. What possible ‘ food ‘ could that be.
It brought home to us that every day is perilous for the innocent.
