Help Our Healthcare Heroes
Help Our Healthcare Heroes
Our country faces an existential threat to our way of life - the COVID-19 pandemic. The virus that causes COVID-19 targets and impacts all of us - regardless of class, creed, race, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, or political ideology.
We are in a fight for our lives.
In times of great calamity, the United States has been blessed with brave and patriotic individuals committed to serving, volunteering, and sacrificing for the benefit and wellbeing of all Americans. Today, these heroes are our healthcare professionals - a broad array of skilled and dedicated individuals who work tirelessly and selflessly, and on whose shoulders carry the burden of saving hundreds millions of lives, often at the risk of their own.
Our Healthcare Heroes - physicians, surgeons, respiratory therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, public health professionals, emergency medical technicians and other healthcare first responders - commit themselves to years of rigorous medical and health education and training. The majority of them must take on significant student loan debt - often upwards of hundreds of thousands of dollars - in order to do so.
Events over the last few months have made it abundantly clear that medical and healthcare education is a worthwhile investment. However, the reality is student loan debt is a tremendous financial burden which not only significantly impacts the professional choices and personal wellbeing of such individuals, but the health and wellbeing of all Americans. It limits the opportunity for healthcare professionals to pursue careers in practices and areas where, while not necessarily the most lucrative, we need them most (e.g., family and emergency medicine, mental health; public and rural hospitals and clinics), widens the gulf between underserved communities and those who have ready access to quality healthcare, and increases burnout and attrition across the profession.
We cannot have a proactive, adaptable, and first-rate healthcare system without outstanding healthcare professionals leading and serving at every level, in all relevant roles, safeguarding the health and wellbeing for all of us.
The fight against the COVID-19 pandemic has been universally characterized as a war, with our Healthcare Heroes serving on multiple fronts. We are enlisting them to be the force taking on this pandemic (and those that will surely follow) in order to preserve our way of life. The last thing they should be doing is worrying about potentially crippling student loan debt, or that debt preventing them from pursuing careers and doing work that redounds to the benefit of ALL Americans. To this end, we ought to have a modern-day version of the GI Bill, through the cancellation of medical and health education student loan debt for health professionals - a Healthcare GI Bill.
Please sign this petition to request the Congress and the President to cancel the medical and health education debt of health professionals fighting to save us from the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure equitable healthcare access for all Americans. If you are so inclined, please share this petition.
Thank you for your consideration. Stay safe and healthy.
