Help Nolan be able to drum one hour a day in his sound proofed studio
The Issue
This is Nolan, he’s 16…and driven. He has over a 96 average in his junior year while taking multiple AP classes as well as college level Spanish and Math. He drums very well. If you’ve heard him perform you know that he literally ooozes talent. He works hard in all aspects of his responsibilities, he knows the value of effort.
I can tell you that the level of his performance requirements so far have not truly tested his actual ability.
If there’s an opportunity offered by the school to perform, he takes it; whether it’s for the multiple high school groups he is a part of, or for the elementary, middle school, and regional performances he volunteers to help out with.
Tonight, while practicing for his All-State performance this weekend he had the village police called on him by one of our neighbors.
We have put thousands of dollars into soundproofing the shed he uses out of respect for our neighbors as we understand that we live in the village and sound carries. He has recently reduced the number of hours that he practices to accommodate a complaint, while I have added additional soundproofing.
In truth, his drumming is no louder than anyone’s lawn mower, leaf blower, chainsaw, barking dog, or Bluetooth speaker that I frequently leave my backyard to avoid…because I understand that I live in a village and we are close to one another.
I think it’s despicable and incredibly selfish, short-sighted, and ignorant of those who complained. Imagine being a dedicated, hard-working kid who’s doing his best to get ready for a performance BEFORE 7:00pm and having to deal with a police officer on a Tuesday night.
I will not tell my son to stop working hard and practicing what he loves to do
As of 11/8 our neighbor that complained came to our door and was confrontational yelling at us to stop the drumming. We said no and that Nolan is a state level drummer. He told us " I don't care what the fuck he is , the drumming needs to stop." We decided because of his aggressive and escalating behavior that we should shut the door. He stormed off our porch yelling "assholes!" He then called the police on us. Leading them to investigate both sides. As of now, the neighbor will call the police anytime Nolan drums. He is practicing for his performances and always before 7pm for one hour. Our neighbor two houses down can't seem to stand that a 16 year old is doing something productive and artistic with his life. We feel our neighbor would rather he deal drugs out of the shed than practice his drums for performances. Please sign this if you agree that Nolan should be allowed to continue to practice in the same respectful manner he has. And he/us should not be subject to such harassment as we have been.
Thank you!!!!
