Two weeks ago, Defense of Democracy along with many other pro-democracy groups, stood up to hate as the anti-government extremist group "Moms for Liberty" assembled for their yearly summit in the Philadelphia Downtown Marriott. We were proud of the extraordinary showing of support by hundreds of volunteers who made signs, sang songs, and spoke out against extremism and censorship. We were thrilled to join the City of Philadelphia as its community came together to coordinate one of the largest protests that Defense of Democracy has had the honor of being involved in. We are especially grateful to have been part of the Philly Children's Group of organizations, and are thankful to the 30,000 individuals worldwide who signed the petition launched to raise awareness about this summit. Moms for Liberty has led a horrifying attack on the American Public School System, has been unapologetically racist and homophobic, has attacked teachers and librarians, and has created a culture of harassment and terrorism within schools. Our children are being denied their culture, in particular those from black and brown families and families within the LGBTQUIA+ communities. Our parents are being denied their right to provide their children with the most excellent education possible. And our country is at threat of losing a system of schooling that was put in place to enhance the critical thinking skills of its citizens. Our founding fathers recognized that American democracy is fragile - and that a school system maintained by the government to enhance the competency of its citizens, is crucial. Defense of Democracy is proud to be a guardian of the American School System and we will continue our efforts to protect our children, families, community and country in the years to come.
