The Issue

I am a mother of 7 I have struggled with  a choice I thought would save my children only in return to rip the only reason to live I have away. My best friend my grandmother and my mother all 3 died in 2021. I moved back to Alabama and unfortunately things were bad again I left my ex husband in 2020 only to come back to the area where he was around I had no choice no family nothing me and my kids. To sum it up my ex tried to kill me cops refused to arrest him nonbiological parents refused to help. My ex went free and then called dhr they put my kids on a safe plan and I agreed to temporary custody of my babies to my nonbiological father who agreed it'd be temporary where as it's been a year I'm not aloud contact and he won't let them come home. Save my babies As a mother to seven beautiful children, my main concern is always their safety and well-being. I want to ensure that they grow up in a world where they feel secure and protected by the systems that are meant to shield them. However, it breaks my heart when the very systems designed to protect the innocent end up punishing victims instead of supporting them. This is a reality that many, including myself, face today.

When individuals bravely step forward to report violent crimes such as assault or threats against them, they should be met with empathy, support, and justice. Instead, too often, they find themselves caught in a web of blame and scrutiny. Victims are interrogated about their actions, motives, and pasts, while the perpetrators often manipulate the system to their advantage. This form of secondary victimization deters victims from coming forward, contributing to an environment where abusers feel emboldened by their likelihood of evading consequences.

The flaws in the current legal processes are evident. Reports from multiple sources, including independent studies and victim testimonials, show that the rate of victim-blaming contributes to lower reporting rates of crimes. According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, around 60% of crimes are not reported. A major reason for this alarming statistic is the fear of not being believed or being treated as the problem, instead of being part of the solution.

Reforms are necessary to ensure that victims are not re-victimized by the systems that should be defending them. Law enforcement and legal entities must be trained to handle such cases with the sensitivity and seriousness they deserve. Victim advocacy programs must be supported and expanded. Legislation should be passed to protect those who report crimes and ensure they are heard and treated with dignity and respect throughout the legal proceedings. Lawmakers need to hold accountable those entities that fail to protect victims.

It's time for change. It's time for justice. We must stand up for victims and assure them that they are supported. No one should be punished for seeking help. By signing this petition, you can help bring attention to this critical issue and demand necessary changes that will protect victims and ensure their voices are heard without fear of retribution.
