Ban Balloons in Bermuda
The Issue
Sea turtles have been completely protected by legislation in Bermuda since 1972. This prohibits direct harvesting and intentional harm yet they are still dying as a result of human activities. Besides fishing line and plastic pollution, balloons are a major threat to these sea creatures. According to the Marine Conservation Society, not only can marine animals get tangled up and trapped in balloons, but they often mistake the bright plastic for food. Once consumed, the balloons can block their digestive tract and they starve to death. A long and painful death so easily avoided simply by removing the threat completely - balloons!
