Stop the superstreet planned for Matthews

Stop the superstreet planned for Matthews

The Issue

John Street in Matthews, NC certainly has a traffic problem. Before relying on an experimental, unproven super street design to solve this issue, we encourage town officials and the NCDOT to finish other street projects that will alleviate traffic Matthews traffic.

Neighborhoods adjacent to John Street are important to the liveliness and viability of our town. Children must be safe getting from their school or home to the library. Visitors to the many events in Stumptown Park should feel safe walking through the John Street intersection to visit the restaurants, bars, and shops. Alternative designs in scale with the pedestrian design of Matthews must be considered.

We are signing this petition to stop the super street proposed through downtown Matthews.

Responded
Thanks for the continued interest in the East John Street project. Let me assure you that I and the entire council are in opposition to the SuperStreet concept and have and will continue to push back on NCDOT. Town staff is also in opposition to this current design. We have engaged a consultant team to provide alternatives that we can discuss and suggest to NCDOT as options rather than the current suggestions of the SuperStreet. These reviews have not been completed nor have we received anything from the consultants as of yet. There will be more input sessions by the consultants prior to their final report. The widening project has been in the works for about 10-15 years and it has always been a four (4) lane cross section. Matthews has been workin towards a boulevard type road with nice soft medians down the length. We have also envisioned full movement traffic signals at Greylock Ridge, McKee Rd and possibly Charles Buckley Way. We have opposed the SuperStret concept since it was first suggested by NCDOT. Make no mistake, Matthew Town Council is opposed to the current design. The goals of NC DOT and Matthews are inconsistent regarding the stretch of roadway. NC DOT has an objective of moving as much traffic as efficiently as possible. We have an objective of maintaining a walkable community that is pedestrian friendly. Not to mention maintaining our charm as a small town. We are continuing to take that approach and express our position and desire at every opportunity when discussing this road with NCDOT. We will continue to take that approach at every opportunity when discussing this road with NCDOT. Bottom line is this, the road is a NCDOT maintained and controlled road and they have the final say. We have to persuade them that this is not what the community wants or in the best interest of our community. The design decision will be that of NCDOT not the Matthews Town Board.
