The Issue

The goal of this petition is to make Magic and the Magic Castle more inclusive.

In light of the recent LA Times Article titled “L.A.’s Storied Magic Castle shaken by allegations of sexual misconduct, racism,” In order to make the Magic Castle a more inclusive place the current Management of the Academy of Magical Arts/ Magic Castle and their General Manager, Joe Furlow, should step down or be replaced.

In addition to accusations of sexual misconduct and racism, there have been other issues plaguing the Magic Castle under Mr. Furlow’s watch, such as mistreatment of LGBTQ+ employees and the harassment of its members.

If the Magic Castle and the Academy of the Magical arts were a Fortune 500 company, Mr. Furlow and his fellow managers would have been asked to step down by now. Still, the organization has continuously supported Mr. Furlow and swiped the issues under the rug.

The reason that Mr. Furlow has not been asked to step down is that he has made the prestigious club millions of dollars and put it into a healthy financial condition.

The Magic Castle needs to be more inclusive.  There comes the point when the value of human rights and human decency is more important than making money.

The Magic Castle is the most prestigious institution in the Magic community, and it should convey the true meaning of Magic, which is greatness.  To be great, The Magic Castle should display behavior and lead in a way that is best in class and above par.

The world looks to Magic and the Magic Castle for joy and inspiration. The Magic Castle is not a bad or evil place. It is a Magical institution that inspires wonder and amazement.  The establishment has fallen victim to a misguided team of leaders, that have not promoted inclusion.

I encourage you to promote inclusion at The Magic Castle and the Academy of Magic Arts and sign this petition.
