Help Make Ardingly Road Safer

The Issue

The curve in the road at the above section of Ardingly Road has significant and constant pedestrian traffic using the footpath called Scrase Twitten. This is acutely busy during the morning and afternoon school run due to Holy Trinity Primary School located at the end of the footpath, however, it remains busy all day and well into the evening with dog walkers and local residents. There have been 2 accidents at this spot in the last 10 years (1 within the last 6 months) and my fear is that the next one could be fatal. I have highlighted my concerns to West Sussex Highways agency and they agree that the bend could do with additional measures put in place.

There is an independent effort from the local Cuckfield Parish Council to make the entire village 20mph, which I naturally welcome and support.

By signing this petition you are not committing to any singular course of action, you will simply be showing your support for safety measures to be increased on the bend and raise awareness for the Parish Council’s desires to make the village 20mph.

Safety features currently in place:

  • SLOW written on the road before the curve.
  • Directional reflective chevron signs highlighting the direction of the corner.
  • Railings running along the South side of the road to protect the fence behind.

Additional measures for consideration: Please note this list is not exhaustive, if you have any further suggestions please do message me.

  • Left/right bend in the road ahead triangular warning signs on approach.
  • Raised, double/triple height kerb or wall with a built-up banking along the outside (south) edge of the corner. This would push any understeering vehicles around the corner rather than into the footpath.
  • Reflective “dolly” plastic bollards that would highlight the curvature of the road.
  • 20mph speed limit
  • Speed bumps
  • Vehicle bollards
  • Armco barrier
  • Illuminated signage
