WE are calling on Donegal County Council, local elected representatives, TDs and Minister for Sport Catherine Ryan to prioritise the establishment of a dedicated cricket ground in our community. 

BACKGROUND

Since being set up in 2019, Letterkenny Cricket Club (LCC) has grown hugely in popularity and has enjoyed considerable success.

From a single team playing in the North West League, Letterkenny now has five squads, including an impressive cohort of young men and women. Its membership currently stands at over 100 individuals, all passionate about the game of cricket.

In 2021 LCC did the double, winning North West League Two and the North West Cup. A mayoral reception was held to honour the players following these wins – victories made all the more remarkable by the fact that the club did not and does not have a home.

Since its establishment LCC has been leasing Drummond cricket ground near Limavady – a journey of 40 miles, or a two hour round trip. For some clubs this may be a hurdle too high. But Letterkenny has persevered and continues to train and compete while also promoting cricket in local schools.

Unfortunately, the club’s task has just become all the more difficult. Letterkenny has had to withdraw its Midweek Team due to St Johnston cricket ground, which had been kindly granted on a part-time basis, no longer being available.

Letterkenny Cricket Club’s single biggest barrier to further expansion, stronger community links and greater successes continues to be the absence of a permanent base.

Amid a growing urgency, we are calling on our elected decision makers to recognize the value of our sport as a cultural, recreational and educational asset. 

We are asking that they commit to the following:

• Identify and allocate suitable land for the construction of a cricket ground in Letterkenny, fully equipped with pitches, training facilities and amenities to support the needs of players of all ages and skill levels.
• Collaborate with relevant stakeholders and work towards a positive outcome that will allow the sport of cricket to grow and flourish in Letterkenny.
