Help increase standards in Waukegan High School
Help increase standards in Waukegan High School
The Issue
Waukegan High school is full of students with many different talents, backgrounds and ideas for the future. The school is full of resources to help students through the journey of entering adulthood. However, students seem to either be oblivious to the resources, or lack the care for their future to utilize them. In addition to this, the credit requirement at the school has changed from 22 to 17. Although there are plans to increase requirements to 19, this still seems low compared to other schools in the county who have requirements in the 20's. This lowering has caused students to graduate as early as Sophomore year with no plan for their future. This also causes a lack of motivation and care in students as they don't see a point in trying super hard when it's not needed. Some may argue that keeping the credits low allows for a higher graduation rate. But we have to ask ourselves, what is more important; someone graduating after doing the bare minimum and having no idea what to do in the near future or, someone taking their time through school and allowing themselves to get the proper guidance as to what to do with their life. WHS is also unfortunately known for lacking care in certain circumstances. When it comes to smoking in the hall, skipping school/class constantly or coming to school just to make the lives of everyone else harder, the school seems to show a lack of attention. The students are responsible for their actions, but, the school is responsible for its lack of accountability and consequences. This school has great potential. But we will never live up to this potential unless we bring attention to the things that are holding us back.
