Help increase pet food transparency

Help increase pet food transparency

The Issue

We are calling on the UK government to demand more transparency into what goes into pet food, and to raise the nutritional bar within the pet food industry.

At Edgard & Cooper we found that the majority of people have little or no knowledge of what goes into pet food. Certain regulations haven’t changed for decades and owners deserve transparency over what’s really going into pet food.

What current legislation allows:

  • For pet food to say made with chicken, only needs to be made with 4% chicken - the other 96% can be anything else - it doesn't have to be meat
  • Pet food contains meat and animal remains like horns, hooves and feathers and often have far less nutritional value
  • Meat and by-products above used for pet food can be transported unchilled as long as it’s turned into ‘meat meal’ for up to 24 hours
  • ‘Meat meal’ is heavily processed meat found in the majority of UK dog food

We have seen a revolution in how we interact with pets - we’ve moved from owning them to becoming parents to them, with nearly all dog owners (98%) saying they treat their furry friend like a human - raising the standards of pet food to reflect this shift is long overdue.

What we’re asking the UK government:

  • Review of legislation related to the claims that can be made on pet food related to meat content
  • Demand the industry labels ingredients clearly and educate owners on content of food
  • Raise the 4% meat claim allowed on pet food
