Why this petition matters

I’m sure we have all heard of Balto, the sled dog, who we all know and love. Balto has a marked statue in Central Park and is the dog who received credit for saving the town. While I am not in anyway undermining his efforts, it should be known that Balto was the backup sled dog and ran the shortest leg of the trip (55 miles) while another dog from the previous leg named Togo, ran over 261 miles and led his team over the most dangerous terrain and all at 12 years of age. Togo has an unmarked statue in the lower east side and I think it is only right for Togo to receive a marked statue, honoring his efforts in Poland, Maine. Togo is responsible for so much of the journey in 1925 delivering the serum to Nome, Alaska and helping those who were ill. Togo saved the lives of thousands of people. In 1960, Seppala (Togo’s musher) said that "I never had a better dog than Togo. His stamina, loyalty and intelligence could not be improved upon. Togo was the best dog that ever traveled the Alaska trail." Togo retired and was laid to rest in Poland Spring, Maine. Let's honor Togo and get a statue of him in Poland Spring, so his spirit may live on and those in the town and traveling through can learn about him and remember him.
