Today, December 7th, it has been 10 months since law enforcement officers in Massachusetts killed our son and brother Juston Root on Feb 7th. That's 10 months without being able to hear his laugh or see his smile. We just had our first Thanksgiving without Juston, and soon we will have our first Christmas without him, too.
In the time that we've been grieving, Suffolk County still has not managed to complete their investigation and share it with us, because they say they're waiting on the findings of the Firearm Discharge Investigation Team of the Boston Police. That's right - a major part of the investigation into whether Boston Police acted appropriately in Juston's case is a team of investigators from the Boston Police Department itself.
This is why we need an independent, transparent investigation, with independent fact-finding - and we need it now. Governor Charlie Baker, Mayor Marty Walsh and Attorney General Maura Healey have ignored the letters we sent on September 18th calling for an independent investigation, and our October 23rd follow-up letter. We will not be ignored. We are left with the question: Where are our leaders when the truth may be inconvenient?
Thank you for standing up for transparency in policing, and for helping our family get #JusticeForJustonRoot. We now have close to 1900 signatures. Please continue to share Juston's petition, this will help us greatly in reaching our next goal, 5K.
