Hi,
It’s been a really interesting, emotional, exhausting, inspiring first week at the sit-in. Just the number of people who have come down to sit with us and talk and show solidarity has been amazing, and then you also meet so many people who really do stop to read the signs and want to talk and find out how they can get involved – I think a few will probably be reading this update, so hi again.
This Saturday we’ll be marking the first anniversary of the publication of Alaa’s book, You Have Not Yet Been Defeated – and his publisher has organised for authors to come and read from his work. It’s going to be a special event, so do come if you’re free on Saturday afternoon between 1pm and 4pm. We’ll also have a few copies of his book there for people to pick up.
The location is here
Then, on Sunday, we’re having a kids’ morning – painting, t-shirt making, banners and signs. I guess we’re supposed to be decorating the camp? We already have a few very nice plants and lots of signs and painted pebbles :) – but I guess after Sunday it’s going to feel quite different. Bring your kids and come over at 11am for that.
Then, from 2pm on Sunday, a group of poets have self-organised an afternoon of readings for Alaa. I’m really curious to see what they come up with – and this is part of what's special about this campaign: these new creative connections being made every day.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the road, it is -hopefully- good news that James Cleverly kept his position as Foreign Minister – he knows the case, has been involved in it since at least May, so we’re hopeful he has a plan for how to use these few days before COP27 begins to really push for Alaa’s freedom. As always, it really makes a big difference if you’re in the UK that you keep writing to your MP.
We’ll send more stuff, more regularly – but for now I just really wanted to let you know about the activities that have come together for this weekend, and to thank each and every one of you for your continued support.
