Urgent Update on Kaavan the Chained Elephant: Join us in Helping Free Kaavan to Sanctuary!
Sep 19, 2015 — Thank you all so much for your love and support of Kaavan!
Thanks to your voices, Kaavan's case is getting the attention it deserves. On Friday, the Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif himself addressed Murghazar Zoo and it's cruelty and neglect of Kaavan. Prime Minister Sharif directed the zoo's authorities to adhere to World Wildlife Fund’s guidelines. Because of his intervention, Kaavan has finally been unchained from his shed! While it is great his chains have been removed, Kaavan still remains in solitary confinement in his tiny pen in Murghazar zoo.
You can find the news coverage and videos of Kaavan's unchaining on our facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kaavantheelephant
Our fight is not over, Kaavan remains in custody of the criminally negligent Murghazar Zoo. His enclosure is simply a length of grass with a small, unclean pond. Worst of all, he is alone, solitarily confined to his pen. The zoo wants to get another elephant from Sri Lanka, but they barely have the resources to care for Kaavan, capturing another wild elephant to bring to this prison would be terrible for both.
After his lifetime of suffering, Kaavan deserves better than this. There is no guarantee that Kaavan will remain unchained once the public eye is no longer on him. The zoo has gone back on it's word to unchain him before.
Our next plan of action is both to ensure both that Kaavan will remain unchained and that the Zoo will free Kaavan to a proper sanctuary.
To help get Kaavan to a sanctuary:
1.) Urge the CDA and Pakistan Authorities to put a live webcam in Kaavan's enclosure so that the public can ensure that he is unchained! Also continue to contact and put pressure on the Pakistan authorities to free him to a sanctuary.

Thank you so much for your help and determination in this fight to free Kaavan. When I started this petition I had no idea that the response would be so overwhelmingly supportive. You all have proven that Kaavan can no longer be considered as Murghazar zoo's elephant. The world has adopted him. He is our elephant now, and we have to show the world that we will do everything we can to protect him.
