"We are aware of the news article regarding Eric's sentence.  The decision took place several months ago, in July.  We have met with Eric since then, and have also sat with his lawyers to discuss options with regard to his case.  In addition, the Ambassador has protested that any U.S. citizen be subject to this penalty, and specifically raised Eric's case at the highest levels of the Kuwaiti government.  Please know that we share your concerns regarding the death penalty, and will continue to protest this sentence.  Note that the Amir must specifically approve any death penalty case, and that an execution may not take place without the Amir's specific approval."
