The Issue

PFAS, also called “forever chemicals,” are found in everyday products — including some period products used by millions of women and girls.

PFAS which stands for per- and polyflouroalkyl substances are a huge group of man-made checmials used since the 1940's in products to resist water, stains, and heat.

They are called “forever chemicals” because unlike other chemicals that eventually break down, PFAS are extremely hard to get rid of. They have very strong chemical bonds that allow them to stay our bodies and in the environment for a really long time.

Scientists and researchers have linked PFAS exposure to serious health concerns including:

  •  hormone disruption,
  • fertility concerns,
  • immune system effects,
  • developmental problems
  • and increased risk of certain cancers.

This is especially concerning for women and girls because hormones play such an important role in our health and development. Period products make direct contact with highly sensitive tissues that absorb chemicals easily.

PFAS have been found in some menstrual products, including pads, tampons, and period underwear.
California made progress when lawmakers passed AB 2515, a law restricting intentionally added PFAS in menstrual products. This means companies are not supposed to purposely add PFAS chemicals as ingredients in these products.

However, products that do not contain intentionally added PFAS are not always the same as products being completely PFAS-free.

That is why stronger enforcement, transparency, and independent testing are still so important.

Right now, many brands still do not clearly disclose testing results or explain how they verify that their products are truly PFAS-free.

Consumers are often left trying to understand confusing labels and marketing claims without enough clear information.

Also, period products are not yet required to be PFAS- free nationally in the United States and there is also no single worldwide rule requiring all menstrual products to be PFAS-free

Women and girls deserve:

  • clearer labeling,
  • stronger safety standards,
  • transparent third-party testing,
  • and accountability from companies making these products.

We are calling on lawmakers and manufacturers to:

  • strengthen enforcement of PFAS restrictions,
  • require more independent testing,
  •  improve ingredient and testing transparency
  • clearer labeling
  • better enforcement
  • and continue working toward truly PFAS-free menstrual products

Women and girls should be able to use essential products without having to worry that they are being exposed to harmful chemicals.

Please sign this petition to support stronger accountability, transparency, and protections for safer period products.
