Dear Concerned Member of Society, 

We are reaching out to request your immediate assistance in tackling the dangerous heat conditions present in Texas Prisons. In the summer months, temperatures within the cells can surpass 100 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in hazardous living and working conditions for both inmates and staff. Please consider the following important key points:  

Health Risks: A study conducted in 2022 indicated that extreme heat is responsible for approximately 14 deaths in prison each year. Additionally, an analysis by the Texas Tribune last year reported that at least 41 inmates lost their lives in facilities lacking cooling during an unprecedented heat wave.  

Mental Health: Elevated temperatures can exacerbate conditions such as anxiety, depression, and aggression, resulting in increased violence and unrest within correctional facilities. For inmates who are already facing mental health challenges, the oppressive heat can render their situations nearly intolerable.  

Humane Treatment: Every person, irrespective of their situation, is entitled to be treated with respect and dignity. The provision of air conditioning is not merely a matter of comfort, it is a critical necessity that can preserve lives and enhance living conditions, thereby facilitating rehabilitation. 

Imagine spending days, weeks, or even years in an overcrowded, poorly ventilated cell with no escape from the relentless heat. For the thousands of inmates in our state prisons, this is their harsh reality. Without air conditioning, the risks are immense: heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and severe mental distress.  

We must remember that even those who are incarcerated deserve to be treated with basic human dignity. Access to air conditioning is not a luxury – it's a necessity that can save lives and significantly improve the living conditions of inmates. 

We cannot stand by while our fellow humans suffer in unbearable conditions. We urge you to sign our petition calling on the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Texas Legislature to allocate necessary funds and take immediate action to install air conditioning units in all Texas prisons.
