Help End LGBTQ+ Homelessness: Give Our Community a Safe Place to Call Home
The Issue
To: Local, state, and federal policymakers, housing authorities, LGBTQ+ organizations, and community leaders
We are calling for meaningful action to address homelessness and housing insecurity within the LGBTQ+ community.
No one should have to choose between sleeping on the streets, staying somewhere unsafe, couch surfing, or returning to an environment where they are not accepted simply because they cannot afford a place to live.
Yet LGBTQ+ people—especially transgender people, LGBTQ+ youth, and people facing discrimination or rejection from family—continue to experience disproportionate housing insecurity and homelessness.
We believe housing is a basic human need, and LGBTQ+ people deserve access to housing that is safe, affordable, affirming, and free from discrimination.
We are asking policymakers and community leaders to take concrete action by:
Increasing funding for LGBTQ+-affirming emergency shelters and transitional housing.
Expanding affordable housing and rental assistance programs for LGBTQ+ people experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
Creating more dedicated housing resources for transgender people and LGBTQ+ youth.
Providing emergency assistance for people facing immediate displacement, including temporary housing, transportation, food, and basic necessities.
Expanding access to case management, employment assistance, mental-health resources, and other services that help people move from homelessness into stable housing.
Strengthening protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in housing and homeless services.
Partnering directly with LGBTQ+ community organizations and people with lived experience when designing housing programs and policies.
This is about more than shelter.
A temporary bed can keep someone alive for a night. Stable housing can give someone the opportunity to rebuild their entire life.
LGBTQ+ people deserve the ability to work, go to school, build relationships, create art, contribute to their communities, and dream about their futures without constantly wondering where they will sleep.
We cannot continue treating LGBTQ+ homelessness as an individual failure when so many people are facing systemic barriers to housing.
We need action—not just awareness.
By signing this petition, you are asking our leaders and communities to invest in LGBTQ+ housing, emergency resources, and long-term solutions that allow people to live safely and with dignity.
Help us protect our community.
Help us house our community.
Help us build a future where no LGBTQ+ person is left without a safe place to call home.
