Help dreamers achieve citizenship
The Issue
My husband is a dreamer. He came to this country as a child, hoping for a better life, and has since become an integral part of our community. He works hard, pays taxes, and dreams of officially calling this nation his permanent home. The dreamer community, like my husband, contributes so much, yet they live in constant fear of deportation and uncertainty surrounding their future.
The United States is home to nearly 700,000 Dreamers who were brought here at a young age and have known no other home but this one. They are students, teachers, entrepreneurs, and neighbors who embody the spirit and values that America stands for. Many dreamers are unable to obtain citizenship due to an outdated and restrictive immigration system that does not reflect our nation’s core values of compassion and opportunity.
Current immigration policies deny them the chance to become full-fledged citizens, despite having lived in the U.S. for the majority of their lives. According to the Migration Policy Institute, approximately 97% of DACA recipients are employed or enrolled in school, contributing significantly to the economy and to our communities. They deserve the right to live without fear and with the promise of a secure future.
We believe that every dreamer deserves a chance at citizenship. Granting them this opportunity would not only affirm their contributions to our society but also magnify the diverse tapestry that makes America unique. A feasible solution to this situation is the passage of the DREAM Act, which will provide a path to citizenship for those who meet certain criteria. It’s time our laws reflect the inclusive values we cherish.
We call on Congress to pass legislation that will offer a solid pathway to citizenship for Dreamers. This is a defining moment for our nation, where we have the chance to stand united against unjust systems that have needlessly instilled fear and insecurity in our communities.
