The Issue

WE DEMAND THAT THE SPA DE QUEBEC AND MAPAQ INVESTIGATE AND HOLD THE PERPETRATORS OF THIS VIOLENCE ACCOUNTABLE!

Please join us in contacting MAPAQ, SPA de Quebec and other relevant ministers who oversee nonhuman animal protection in regards to addressing a mass injustice that took place at Expedition Mi-Loup in Quebec.

Based on footage/photos captured, it was discovered that Expedition Mi-Loup, a commercial dog sledding facility in Quebec, had been complicit in violent acts towards dogs that reside(d) in their care. Expedition Mi-Loup had been gassing and killing both puppies and adult dogs and disposing of their bodies in freezers on their property. A whistleblower shared this horrific reality and investigators went to Mi-Loup to get footage of the victims. Both MAPAQ and SPA de Quebec were notified several times to no avail. Given this, we are imploring these governing bodies to intervene immediately, to investigate this violence, consider the removal of any remaining dogs, and partner with rescues to find them forever homes.

Facilities like this normalize violence that the average person would deem inhumane, and mainly, this goes unnoticed. There is a separate account still under investigation. A tourist recorded an employee inflicting violence towards the dogs after a sled ride. Nothing has been resolved in this case to date. The fact is, dogs are considered property and have no protection under the current laws, which makes it easier for matters such as this to be dismissed. And authorities/governing bodies often turn a blind eye in these situations and do nothing to remove the victims from these unsafe environments. It goes without saying, that profiting off enslaved nonhuman animals is not an ethical way to conduct business.

“Dogs are treated like objects with no space or water at their disposal to survive. My dogs got off the [track] and one [employee] came and kicked them in the stomach, punched them in the face and another [employee] told me it was my fault if he hit him, because I had misdirected my sled!”denounces the client who posted the videos on her Facebook account."

The documentary, Sled Dogs, by filmmaker Fern Levitt, exposes the reality of this industry across our country, including the Whistler massacre of dogs, following the 2010 Olympics. More recently, a CTV W5 episode, ‘Dogs In Distress’ highlights the reality for dogs exploited in this industry and sheds light on the mass injustice these dogs face regardless of what ‘conditions’ they may be living in. No codes of practice or standards of care will ever ensure justice for these dogs so long as they are being used to pull humans on a sled for nothing  more than entertainment and tourism to make businesses money. Nationwide, the industry as a whole runs rampant with neglect and unethical practices. Although apparently if you are the 'owner', it is considered legal in Canada to shoot one’s dog(s) if they are old, unwell or no longer 'profitable'. Beyond the violent treatment of these dogs, who spend all year on chains or in cages and surrounded by their own excrement, profiting off them for entertainment or for any means, is unjust, exploitative and unnecessary. These dogs are being bred into existence to forcibly train them to pull humans around for a few hours a day during the winter months. According to animal behaviourists, the entire existence of these businesses creates distress for these dogs. This alone should be the justification for shutting down dog sledding facilities once and for all.

In 2022, there is no need to be using the bodies of sentient beings to make money when other tourist companies are equally or more successful offering activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, canoeing, camping, snowmobiling, etc.

The time is now. The government needs to step up, intervene and demand that these facilities evolve their business models into something ethical, and not at the expense of someone else’s freedom. When profiting off the use of nonhuman animals is the foundation of any business model, rest assured it relies on power, control and domination. It is time to reconsider the type of business this government supports – a speciesist and violent one or one founded on ethics and social responsibility.

We demand that the government and governing bodies acknowledge this violence and we implore them to take charge, by holding those accountable for exploiting/killing these dogs, removing the remaining ones immediately and transferring them to safe, forever homes.
