The Issue

Have you ever felt the happiness of your school lunch consisting of expired milk, dried-out vegetables, and bagged pre-cooked foods filled with droplets of condensation after being put in the microwave? Of course not! No one would, both parents and students would rather enjoy eating foods that are fresh, nutritional, and flavorful, however, that’s something school foods are yet to meet.

School foods being unhealthy and overall untasteful has been a brewing topic that the administration has been trying to change for years, however, one of the biggest changes that has happened was the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act in 2010. It set new standards that required more fruit, vegetables, and whole grains in school meals, less fat and sodium, as well as other improvements. But despite the push for these mandatory changes, school foods are still lacking nutritional standards and are never served fresh. In the article “California School Lunches Missing the Mark for Nutrition Standards” by Eleanor Yang Su there has been data found by Calfironia Watch that “60% of the school lunches reviewed by the state in the past five years failed to meet at least one federal nutritional requirement.” There's also been many other cases where students complain about dried vegetables, cold food, and spoiled drinks. In addition, many of the school foods consist of foods that usually exceed sodium levels and aren’t the healthiest meals that should be provided to students.

This is an issue that must be changed because healthy foods have been proven many times to help a student's diet, and moods, be more focused on what they are doing, and keep their energy up. Not only that but we also have to take into consideration of the the amount of food that is going to waste since many kids rather prefer not eating lunch food or sometimes throw away their food. If this isn’t changed there will be a lot of waste products, unhealthy diets in students, and a lack of students taking the benefits of these free foods.
