The Issue

I have skated at Smoot Park in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, for my entire life. It's where I first picked up a skateboard and learned the basics. While Smoot Park is an excellent place for beginners, offering a friendly environment for learning, it falls short for more experienced skaters eager to push their limits and hone their skills. It's high time that we enhance our skatepark to accommodate the growing number of skaters in our community.

A few years back, there was momentum and discussions to build a new, more comprehensive skatepark. Unfortunately, plans fizzled out, and we've been left without the facilities that many of our neighboring towns offer. Towns across America are recognizing the importance of skateparks as not only recreational venues but as vital community assets that contribute to healthy lifestyles, community engagement, and even as spaces to deter negative behavior.

According to the Tony Hawk Foundation, skateparks attract young people who are often under-served recreationally. 93% of skaters are under the age of 25, and over 75% are young males. A new skatepark would directly serve this age demographic, providing a positive and safe space for them to gather and express themselves. Moreover, communities with skateparks find that parks often become hubs of positive community interaction.

We are envisioning a state-of-the-art skatepark that caters to beginners and seasoned skaters alike, with features that challenge and inspire creativity: bowls, ramps, street sections, and more. Such a skatepark would undoubtedly attract visitors, potentially boosting local business and tourism in North Wilkesboro.

We ask for the support of local stakeholders including our mayor, town council, and community groups to come together and reconsider the plans for a new skatepark. We need funding, and planning to bring this dream back to life. By doing so, we can ensure that the youth and future generations of North Wilkesboro have a place to not only skate but to thrive and grow.

Please join me in showing our decision-makers how much this means to our community. Sign this petition to support the construction of a new skatepark in North Wilkesboro. Let's reignite the plans and build a future for our local skaters!

I just wanted to acknowledge that I have seen the petition supporting a new skatepark in North Wilkesboro. I appreciate the effort taken to create the petition and everyone who signed it. It's good to see there is support for it and people who care enough to communicate with the board about it. Over the past few years, the town has considered this project and actively looked for grant money that might help fund it. I think the biggest issue right now with a project like this is budgetary. Due to inflation, prices continue to rise, which became a big factor in the recent renovation at Smook Park. I will continue to keep this project in mind moving forward. Thanks again! I have been involved in discussions regarding inquiries and interest about building a new skatepark. We clearly see the support and appreciate that individuals in our community are interested in promoting development and opportunities that include recreation. I understand this project has been discussed and past efforts actively sought grant funding. I believe that the real issue now is funding; therefore, we will continue working to identify possibilities to support this type of project. Again, we recognize your interest and we will ensure the full board is aware. Thank you!
