Help Bring Mountain Bike trails to Hampton Roads

The Issue

The Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association (EVMA) would like the opportunity to create additional trail systems in conjunction with all Parks and Recreation Departments in Hampton Roads.

Although the sport of mountain biking is growing rapidly, local participants have to leave the city of Chesapeake altogether in order to ride on trails other than Indian River Park. This increases fuel consumption and pollution, diverts business from local bike shops and ancillary businesses, and limits the choices available to Southside off-road cyclists.

In addition to the growing Mountain Bike Community, bicycling as an activity in general is accessible to a large portion of the City’s population and fosters a healthy lifestyle.
- Bicycling is the favorite activity of America’s youth, ages 6-17 (Outdoor Foundation)
- Bicycling is the 4th most popular outdoor activity among Americans ages 6 and older (43.3 million). That’s almost 3 times the number of people that play soccer (15.4 million) (Outdoor Foundation)

Having additional local trails available to residents may also have the added benefit of getting more families out on their bikes more frequently.
