The issue

During my time at Glen Waverley Secondary College, I've always enjoyed seeing our school from different perspectives: whether it's through music, sport, art, or just the everyday conversations that make our school such a vibrant place to be. I believe that everyone has a story worth sharing, and that inspired me to propose the creation of Glenny News: a student led media club dedicated to celebrating the voices, achievements and hard work of our diverse student body.

Glenny News would be a 2 minute, pre-recorded weekly news program created and managed by students, for students. Club members would work together to plan, script, film and edit each episode before it is shown at assemblies or shared with the wider school community.

The program would consist of two one-minute segments. The first would feature two main student hosts presenting whole school announcements, upcoming events, interviews with students and staff, achievements and other exciting news from around the school. The second segment would focus on year-level news, where two new volunteers from each year level would present announcements and information relevant to their peers. This allows many different students to get involved throughout the year while ensuring every year level has the opportunity to be represented.

Not only would Glenny News make school communication more interactive, but it would also provide opportunities for students interested in journalism, filmmaking, editing, presenting and public speaking to develop valuable skills while contributing to the school community. More importantly, it would create a platform where students can celebrate each other's achievements, share different perspectives and strengthen the sense of connection across our school.

The weekly Glenny News video would be shown at assemblies to present information in a refreshing and engaging format, while allowing students to regularly see new voices and perspectives represented. Episodes could also be shared with the wider school community, helping families stay connected with events, achievements and opportunities happening at Glen Waverley Secondary College.

This petition has been created to demonstrate genuine student interest in establishing Glenny News as an official club at Glen Waverley Secondary College. By signing, you are showing that this is an initiative our school community would like to see explored and supported.

If you have any questions, suggestions, or would like to become involved in Glenny News as a presenter, script writer, editor, interviewer or a behind the scenes member, please feel free to contact me at BAR0047@gwsc.vic.edu.au. All will be welcomed and be placed in a spot that they desire.
