Help Big Island Local Businesses and Community With The Week Long Ironman Race

The Issue

The Ironman race was started years ago when Kailua Kona was not a well-established tourist business town. No businesses really lost revenue back then because there weren't that many businesses on the island that were affected by the full-day race.

The town has grown a lot in years past and so has the Ironman race. And we stand and ask Ironman to start considering the negative effects caused by their race on some of the local businesses and the community during their week long Ironman event.

Businesses that are not hotels, or restaurants right in down town lose a lot in revenue and their employees lose wages - during the week long Ironman event because most athletes come to the island only to race, not support local businesses.

I was told by a business owner that during the 2 day Ironman they lost $82K in revenue and lost close to a million in revenue throughout the years of Ironman being held in Kailua Kona.

We stand and ask Ironman to compensate all businesses and their employees who have to lose money during their event.

During the week long Ironman event locals are forced to sit in extra long traffic, and during the race day locals have a hard time getting to work on time or even at all. This means lost wages.

There is hardly any parking for locals, regular customers, and visiting tourists in town for a least a week or more during Ironman.

We ask that Ironman look into creating more parking during their week long event in Kailua Kona town because they need to share the town with it's community and tourists.

Furthermore, even though it's called the Big Island, Kona is a very small town. Our grocery stores, gas stations, etc... have issues accommodating everyone's needs because of the thousands of extra people who show up during this week long event. Many locals have a hard time getting their basic grocery needs to supply everyday meals for their ohana's.

Because of this we ask that Ironman set a limit to the entourage that joins each athlete and if they are found to go over they need to be disqualified.

We understand that Ironman brings a lot of money to some businesses however, we would like to come together with Ironman corporation and the mayor to make sure everyone can work together with Aloha so all businesses and employees are not negatively affected by this event.

We ask Ironman to set extra rules for athletes to follow the law when they are here because some bikers run red lights and there are also chase cars following athletes during the week and these cars are driving way under the speed limit on the HWY and this could cause accidents.

We ask that Ironman disqualify any athlete who get's caught breaking driving/riding laws and etiquette. Get's caught by a police officer or the community who take photos of this behavior.

Some bikers also ride over the white line that cars are supposed to be using. These bikers will ride more than 2 across and over the car's white line. These bikers need to be disqualified because this could cause accidents and even death.

We ask that Ironman inform athletes to respect the local community and not to go into shops asking for water when the shops water is to be used for their guests. These athletes need to be prepared with their own supplies.

We ask Ironman to set up bathrooms for athletes all over the race track a week before the race, so using a bathroom isn't an issue for athletes.

We ask Ironman to inform their athletes that they MUST be kind to the community and not yell at UPS or FedEx employees when they are shipping their bikes back because this behavior is NOT acceptable behavior and  we ask that if their are complaints about a certain athlete that this athlete is NOT allowed to race in future Ironman races in Kailua Kona town.

We ask Ironman to be more respectful and have workers start working early the morning the race is finished to start picking up ALL of the rubbish left ALL OVER the west side of Big Island.

We ask Ironman to make sure the vendors are NOT blocking local traffic when they are setting up and breaking down. If they are caught by photos from the community that they are blocking traffic, these vendors shouldn't be allowed back next year because they need to respect the community's time and space.

We ask that Ironman also not allow vendors back who do not take every item they put out and leave the area as they found it.

We ask that Ironman consider the hundreds, if not thousands of tourists who miss their flights every year because of the closures of the roads due to their race. Tourists then have to pay for another hotel and another flight that could cost them thousands of extra money.

We ask that Ironman pay for seriously advertising all over the island starting a week before their Ironman race to let tourists know they must head to the airport hours in advance in order to possibly make their flights because there will be hours long traffic during the Ironman race.

We ask that Ironman not close off traffic on Alii Dr. in town until late Friday because this adds even more traffic all over down town Kona.

All athletes and locals should be kept safe during the week long Ironman event and we stand and ask Ironman to bring their own medical type hospital with staff because every year Ironman overwhelms the short staffed hospital in Kona.

Please sign, share and comment below on this petition on how you feel about Ironman not considering businesses who lose revenue, employees who lose wages, respect and consideration for all the community who are seriously negatively affected by this week long event.

We ask Ironman to consider all these factors and work to help make this event more respectful and considerate to all who live here and visit.
