Help Basingstoke tackle booster appointment shortages

The Issue

For the past few weeks, it seems there are no new appointments available in Basingstoke for booster vaccines. And hardly any in the entire Hampshire county.

I know this because I’ve been trying to book boosters for family members who are over 60. We’re lucky that we can travel to get an appointment if needed. But I’ve learned that others in the region are struggling too - including some of who are vulnerable and elderly who can’t make the 15+ mile journey to the nearest available appointment/walk-in centre.

That is why I’m calling on the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to open up more facilities in the area to help with this. And for MP Maria Miller to support.

For those vulnerable and elderly people, travelling via public transport may be difficult or may not feel like an option. We need to help them get their booster shots ASAP.

As someone who used to volunteer at the local vaccine centre in the area which has closed, I know how important it is to have a centre that was easy for people to get to. I worry that this issue will mean people who were willing and wanting to get their vaccine, will be unable to do so. Or they will be forced to delay - risking lives. The Government have pleaded for people to get their boosters - but regions like this are struggling.

I also understand the enormity of the logistical effort and care that has gone into the vaccine + booster roll-out - especially by those working in these centres. And I hope this petition serves to highlight the issue in a helpful way. Lastly, I call on the NHS Digital to provide a feedback function on the page to understand whether this is affecting other regions too.

Please sign this petition and share. It’d also be very helpful if you could leave a comment with your experience.
