Bringing an HEB to Del Valle, TX
Bringing an HEB to Del Valle, TX
The Issue
The Red Cross Club of Del Valle High School has decided to take on the initiative of trying to bring a grocery story to Del Valle. The closest one to Del Valle is 11 miles away on Riverside (20 minute car ride for those in Del Valle who are fortunate enough to have a car, an hour and 7 minute bus ride for the rest) which categorizes Del Valle as being in a food desert despite being only 10 miles away from the massive metroplex of Austin. H-E-B has owned land on Highway 71 & FM 973 since 2016 but has opted out of building since then until the area becomes more developed. The issue with waiting for the land to become more developed is that H-E-B is suggesting that the people who currently live in Del Valle are not important enough or significant enough to deserve having a grocery store within a reasonable distance from their homes, like the rest of Austin. This initiative is very important not just to my coworker and me, but to the entire community. The Del Valle Community Coalition has been trying to bring attention to this issue for years, but to no avail. I'm hoping if we can bring enough attention to this issue, H-E-B will finally decide to do their part in putting an end to the massive food insecurity here in Del Valle.
