Luyolo Somhlahlo,Professional Nurse of DoH, tortured a young woman during a miscarriage.
The Issue
In the early morning (05h50) of Sunday, 26 February 2023 in the rural town of Ntabankulu, in Alfred Nzo District of the Eastern Cape. A young pregnant woman visited a Community Health Care Centre as she was experiencing unbearable pain which led to a miscarriage. Upon her arrival at this Health Centre, she was unable to walk, and she was aided by her 19-year-old friend. The security guards at this facility had to wake up the nurses who were sleeping on duty. The young woman was attended to by a ''not so' professional - Luyolo Somhlahlo, who is a Professional Nurse at this facility. Luyolo Somhlahlo was with his two other colleagues, a Male Nurse and a Female Nurse. The young woman had wrapped herself in a towel, which Luyolo Somhlahlo took, and laid the towel in a clinic bed and used a sheet, he removed the foetus and cleaned her up - during this time he insulting the young woman accusing her of aborting the pregnancy calling her a criminal and a liar when she rejected his accusation of abortion. Luyolo Somhlahlo took the photo of the foetus using the phone of the young woman, which he took forcefully from her. He told her that she needs to show the foetus to all of her friends so that they can see the results of aborting a pregnancy. The other male nurse called the 19-year-old girl who was accompanying the pregnant young woman to come and see the foetus. Luyolo Somhlahlo gave her back her towel which was now soaked in her blood, this is the towel he used as a sheet for the bed she laid on, and he placed the foetus in a red plastic bag and gave the foetus to the young woman to take home. These health care workers tortured a young woman who needed help from the only government department in South Africa that is a custodian and mandated to offer quality health care services to its citizens. Instead, the healthcare workers of Ntabankulu Community Health Care Centre were cruel, and inhumane and gave degrading treatment to the young women.
Luyolo Somhlahlo has violated section 27 (1a) of the South African Constitution which clearly states that ''EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO HAVE ACCESS TO ''HEALTH CARE SERVICES, INCLUDING REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH''. He has violated this young woman's right to dignity. He has tortured her and humiliated them. We are calling for the Department of Health to take action against Luyolo Somhlahlo and his colleagues. They do not deserve to serve our communities as they acted in a very barbaric manner. Luyolo Somhlahlo and his colleagues must be fired. We demand a demonstrated patient-centred approach in Ntabankulu Health Care Centre. Enough is enough. There is no other patient that should be ill-treated and degraded in this facility ever again. KWANELE!!!
