HEALTHFIRST - Allow casual Friday attire and professional nails
The Issue
Every Friday used to be a day to embrace a bit of comfort in the midst of our hectic workweek. We could dress in jeans and express a piece of our personality while still dressing appropriately with our mandatory polo shirts. Unfortunately, with recent changes to our workplace policy, our much-cherished 'Friday jeans' have been taken away. This decision is less about maintaining professionalism and more about causing unnecessary stress and financial burden.
Imagine having to stretch an already tight budget just to keep up with an unyielding dress code. Shopping for additional so-called 'professional' bottoms every time our wardrobe doesn't meet the mark isn't something many of us can afford. Casual Fridays were a breath of fresh air, a reminder that we aren't just cogs in a corporate machine, but individuals deserving of comfort and self-expression.
Wearing nail polish is another point of contention. My nails don’t interfere with my efficiency or professionalism—if anything, they boost my confidence and help me embrace my individuality. For many of us, adorning our nails is much more than a cosmetic choice; it’s an important outlet for creativity and self-identity. We do have lives outside of here and as long as we come and take care of our patients and cater to our providers nothing else should determine our work ethics!
It’s time to rethink these rigid policies. The world is evolving towards a more understanding, vibrant workplace culture where employees are valued for their substance, not just their appearance. Businesses like Virgin and Google have led the way in fostering an environment where what you wear doesn’t overshadow the work you produce. Even the military allows personality, it is becoming quite disgusting and targeted at this point!
Thus, we propose that our workplace reinstates the tradition of 'casual Fridays', allowing jeans to be part of our Friday attire along with permitting employees to wear professionally done nails. These changes will help improve morale, show trust in employee professionalism, and ultimately create a more inclusive and modern work environment.
