Health Canada to Approve Sale of Quorn in Canada!

The Issue

The UK has sold Quorn products for many many years. It is delicious, the selection there is excellent, and it is a great source of protein and meat substitute for those that do not eat meat.

Mycoprotein is a source of protein that is high in fibre and low in saturated fat. A natural, nutritious fungus that grows in the soil, known as fusarium venenatum, is used to create mycoprotein through a fermenting process similar to that used for  making beer, bread etc.

The 2018 IPCC report called for the Earth's population to reduce its meat consumption, in favour of healthy eating, to reduce the environmental impacts of our diets. Mycoprotein uses 90% less land and water than producing some animal protein sources, it is a great example of a more sustainable and nutritious protein source for a growing global population.

It’s high in protein, low in saturated fat and gluten free. In a world that is battling obesity and chronic illnesses such as diabetes, such options as mycoprotein are essential.

Currently, Quorn is sold in 19 countries, so why is Health Canada so reluctant to approve its sale in Canada? We can smoke cannabis and eat foods loaded with cancer causing substances, but we can’t eat mycoprotein?

Please sign this petition to encourage Health Canada to rethink their position and reinstate Quorn into Canada. Thanks!
