Do not increase the levels of the poison Glyphosate in Canada's agriculture.

The Issue

Dear Minister Hajdu,

We are writing to you out of grave concern for the dangers posed by glyphosates. This pervasive chemical is harmful to human health. Please - do not allow Bayer to decide what is safe for Canadians to ingest. This company wants to permit increased use of this dangerous product, despite evidence of the risks posed by existing usage.

At least 19 countries have completely banned glyphosates for agricultural use, and Germany will have totally phased them out by 2024. Although the United States government has not yet completely prohibited them, glyphosates have already been banned in several states and municipalities.

This petition is asking the Canadian government to do the same. The health of Canadians must not be dictated by a multinational pharmaceutical company. Our country should not be ruled by a multinational pharmaceutical. Several European countries refuse to import Canadian products because of the amount of glyphosates currently used.

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has determined that just having Bayer’s analysis is sufficient. This is unacceptable, and in fact irresponsible. Canadians rightfully expect the PMRA to act, with integrity, in accordance with their responsibilities. Their website states that “Pesticides are stringently regulated in Canada to ensure they pose minimal risk to human health and the environment. Under authority of the Pest Control Products Act, Health Canada…registers pesticides after a stringent, science-based evaluation that ensures any risks are acceptable.”

Bayer has agreed to settle nearly 100,000 U.S. lawsuits for $10.9 billion, while still denying claims that Roundup (Glyphosate) caused cancer. *   And, on May 26, U.S. District Judge Vincent Chhabria rejected a $2 billion settlement proposed by Bayer-Monsanto to reign in future lawsuits over its deadly product, Roundup—saying the proposed settlement was “clearly unreasonable” and could not be salvaged by “mere tweaks.” **

Minister Hajdu, the level of glyphosates should not be permitted to increase – they should be banned entirely. Most countries are working to ban this dangerous pesticide, yet Canada is poised to increase it. We deserve better. Please show that you care about the health of Canadians. Thank you.
