Demand Environmental Accountability from L.A.'s Largest Wastewater Treatment Plant!

The Issue

After a powerful rainstorm pounded Los Angeles on September 15, hundreds of pounds of medical waste (tampon applicators, condoms, and syringes) washed ashore on nearby beaches, threatening the health of beachgoers and the lives of marine animals. This deluge of debris originated from a discharge pipe flowing from the Hyperion Wastewater Treatment Plant out to sea. The plant has yet to provide an explanation for how this quantity of sewage trash could have escaped the treatment process where it should have been captured and disposed of properly.

It took a week until a cleanup was initiated–a tragic missed opportunity to collect these hazardous, non-biodegradable items.

The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board must take action to hold Hyperion accountable for this incident and take steps to ensure it never happens again.

With an unusually strong El Niño predicted to hit Southern California this winter, we can't afford to put the health and safety of millions of beachgoers at risk due to another breach of the discharge pipe.

Add your name to this petition to show the Regional Board that you will fight for clean water and healthy beaches!
