Problem

According to the current HDH proposal, the most affordable and only on-campus housing opportunities for graduate students, SGA and The Rita, will be withdrawn as options in 2019 and 2020, respectively, and converted into undergraduate housing.

After this time, the most affordable housing option for graduate students will increase drastically. Namely, One Miramar St (OMS) will become the cheapest housing option, presenting a rent increase in excess of 19% (current rental rates are $531 for SGA & $635 for OMS). This increase will be in addition to the yearly rental adjustments, which (for OMS, Mesa Nueva) ranged between 5.5%-7.2% in 2018 (this is well above graduate students’ GSR/TA/fellowship pay adjustments)!

Furthermore, the closing of SGA and The Rita would increase commute times for all current residents. This affects graduate students heavily, since many work on campus until late in the evening.

Solution

Keep SGA and The Rita open for graduate students so that an affordable and on-campus housing opportunity persists.

Why should we sign this petition?

As graduate students, we have a lot on our plates: lab work, TA/Reader positions, research - all in addition to external concerns and duties. It can be too easy to neglect our other ambitions, such as caring for each other and for our next generation of colleagues.

Most of us may not be directly affected by this HDH proposal. However, promoting an inclusive future environment for grad students will lead to a better grad life, which affects us all! We hope that, with your support, we will be able to motivate HDH to amend these proposed changes.

Let's speak up together!
