Elena Kounitski started this petition to Hawaii Governor David Y. Ige

We are asking Gov. Ige to reject Mayor Victorino's proposal for an additional Covid test and a subsequent few days of quarantine for travelers arriving on or after October 15th.

Gov. Ige promised that Hawaii will open on Oct 15 with pre-testing, and people already booked their flights and stays. With this last-minute change, most travelers would cancel and this will result in effective postponing of the re-opening.

Local Maui businesses suffer, locals need work. The state already has a 1 billion dollar loan for unemployment funding that needs to be repaid. By Mayor Victorino’s decision, travelers to Maui, who booked vacation rentals, will not be able to quarantine in them. That will be an additional incentive for those travelers to cancel. Vacation rental owners are barely able to make ends meet and might be forced to part with their businesses very soon.

With only 2 weeks until the announced pre-testing reopening date, airlines, hotels and local businesses have already started planning for the reopening. Pulling the rug out from under them for a third or fourth time with such short notice will be detrimental to them and the employees that were planning on getting back to work.
