Hawaii wildlife agency commits
cruelty under cover of pandemic
(Honolulu, August 10, 2020) Facing a surge of coronavirus cases on Oahu, Mayor Kirk Caldwell of the City and County of Honolulu recently ordered the closure of all state parks on the island. During the first similar closure back in March, colony caretakers were allowed to enter the parks in order to feed their cats. This time around, the State's wildlife agency, which administers the parks, has decided the crisis is a good excuse to starve the cats to death or force their removal.
This past weekend, a caretaker requested permission to enter a park and feed his colony, State Parks Administrator Curt Cottrell refused. Instead, he offered to issue the caretaker a special permit authorizing him to permanently remove his cats. In other words, according to Cottrell, the caretaker can let the cats starve or get rid of them.
Under the current emergency orders, people can enter the parks to go surfing, swimming, use the bathrooms, take a shower, go fishing and practice shooting or archery at ranges. But per Cottrell's cruel rules, someone feeding hungry cats cannot. An individual feeding cats and wearing a mask is engaged in a socially distant activity and poses little to no risk of virus spread. The use of a deadly pandemic as a pretext to eliminate cats from state parks - a long-standing goal of Hawaii's wildlife agency - is an outrage!
