The Issue

Conway and the surrounding area are in need of a new, modern skatepark in the City of Conway. As the city grows, it is crucial that we provide recreational spaces for our young people. A new skatepark would offer a free, safe, and enjoyable space for kids and teens, while also serving as a hub for community engagement. The current skatepark, though once a valued asset, has become outdated and increasingly hazardous, and is no longer serving the needs of our city's youth.

Need for a New Skatepark:

Growing Population: Conway has experienced substantial growth over recent years. This expansion has resulted in a greater demand for recreational spaces that promote physical activity and community interaction. Our young population, in particular, is in need of a modern, safe environment where they can engage in outdoor activities such as skateboarding, BMX biking, and rollerblading.

Outdated and Hazardous Current Skatepark: The existing skatepark is outdated and presents a safety hazard. The surfaces are uneven, the ramps are worn down, and there are numerous cracks and holes. This has led to an increase in injuries and has discouraged young skaters from using the facility. The current skatepark, located at the Mcgee Center, was built many years ago and does not meet the needs of today's skaters, nor does it reflect the growing interest in action sports in our community.

The Importance of Free Recreation: A new skatepark would be a free space where kids and teens can engage in healthy, physical activity, helping to reduce the growing concerns of childhood inactivity and related health issues. The skatepark would also provide a positive alternative for young people to spend their free time, reducing the chances of negative behaviors often associated with lack of recreational outlets.
Proposed Features and Benefits:

Safe, Modern Design: The proposed skatepark would be designed with safety in mind, featuring high-quality materials, smooth ramps, proper drainage, and ample lighting. The design would be carefully tailored to accommodate users of all skill levels—from beginners to advanced skaters—ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the space safely.
Community and Economic Impact: The skatepark would serve as a community gathering place, offering young people a venue for socializing and building camaraderie. In addition, the presence of a modern skatepark would likely attract local events and competitions, providing a boost to local businesses and creating opportunities for tourism.
Free and Accessible: The proposed skatepark would be open to the public at no cost, ensuring it is accessible to all members of the community, regardless of their financial situation. This is particularly important in providing an inclusive recreational space for underprivileged youth.
Conclusion:

We urge the City Council of Conway to recognize the importance of this proposed skatepark for the well-being of our city's youth. A modern, safe, and accessible skatepark would not only provide a free space for kids to be active but also foster a sense of community and pride in our growing city. We believe that investing in a new skatepark is an investment in the future of Conway.

We respectfully request that the City Council prioritize this project and allocate the necessary resources for the construction of a new skatepark. Together, we can create a fun, safe, and inclusive space for the youth of Conway for years to come.
