The Issue
Petition to Expand School Bus Service to Estrella Crossing Community.
Families in Estrella Crossing are asking the Laveen Elementary School District to reconsider its current transportation boundaries and include our neighborhood in the bus service for Laveen Traditional Academy.
When Laveen Traditional Academy was built adjacent to our community, many families naturally expected that a neighborhood located next to the school would be included in its transportation service area. Instead, Estrella Crossing has been excluded because it falls within the District’s walking boundary, leaving many families without access to school bus transportation.
Traditionally, school bus routes are designed to ensure students who cannot reasonably or safely get to school have reliable transportation. In our case, despite living near the school, many students still face significant obstacles. Parents are balancing demanding work schedules, caring for younger children, and managing transportation challenges that make daily drop-off and pick-up difficult.
More importantly, this is a student safety issue. Arizona’s extreme heat regularly exceeds 110°F during the school year. Asking children to walk long distances in these conditions places them at risk for dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses. Safe transportation should account not only for distance but also for the environmental conditions students face every day.
Expanding bus service to Estrella Crossing would improve student safety, increase accessibility, and better support working families. We respectfully ask the Laveen Elementary School District to review its current transportation policy, evaluate the unique needs of our neighborhood, and consider adding Estrella Crossing to the bus route. A community survey, review of walking conditions, or a pilot transportation program could help determine the best long-term solution.
As our community continues to grow, we believe transportation policies should evolve to reflect the needs of the families they serve, ensuring that students have safe, equitable, and reliable access to their education.
