The FT today Fri 13th Sept showed Corbyn's weakness over the past 3 years and why the danger of Leave is still on the cards with the current disastrous Johnson.
Corbyn has failed to say where he stands and now, clearly, doesnt want a No Deal exit. But he wont convince his Party to come down on the Remain side with a strong message to reform the EU. Why? Answer: The Trade Union Leader Len McCluskey as well as maybe Corbyn's Marxist roots which are now being shaken.
The FT reported that adopting a Remain stance could alienate millions of voters in Labour’s working class heartlands of the Midlands and the north. But why doesnt Corbyn convince such a large part of Labour to understand how disastrous for workers would be a Leave vote and how much they would gain with a Remain vote?
The issue came to a head, according to the FT, in a heated argument on Tuesday in Brighton when trade union leaders met Mr Corbyn and shadow chancellor John McDonnell during their annual conference. Many swung behind Len McCluskey, general secretary of Unite the Union and one of the most powerful figures in the party, who said that the party should keep its current position.
It does seem that, finally, McDonnell (along with Deputy Labour Party Leader Tom Watson gets it! Mr McDonnell argued that Labour needed to shift to a clear election pledge to hold a referendum almost immediately, without fresh EU negotiations, on the existing Tory deal. But he found himself broadly isolated within the room. Animosity between the two figures goes back years: Mr McCluskey urged Mr Corbyn not to give the job of shadow chancellor to Mr McDonnell when he became leader four years ago. Labour insiders predicted a close-fought battle at conference as the party tries to forge consensus over the issue. The McDonnell view is likely to be backed by much of the membership, many MPs and some other senior figures such as shadow foreign secretary Emily Thornberry and shadow Brexit secretary Keir Starmer. But Mr McCluskey is understood to have the backing of not only other union leaders but also senior aides in Mr Corbyn’s team, including head of strategy Seumas Milne and chief of staff Karie Murphy.
So ignore McCluskey, dear Mr Corbyn, join the Lib Dems and get Britain back on track!
