As the G20 gets under way in Buenos Aires today, no doubt that Trump will be ignored as well he should be. But Britain too?
As three former Labour foreign secretaries have warned there is huge potential damage to British influence around the world if the UK leaves the EU. In fact the damage has already been done but is reversible if Britain revokes Article 50.
"At the moment, people are having to go sullenly to accept the situation is as it is - not remotely anticipated by the Brexiteers nor anything like that which was promised," Jack Straw told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.
David Milliband, in his FT article, emphasised Britain's declining power ""Whether we are standing up to the challenges posed by a revisionist Russia, tackling security threats in the Indian Ocean, running peacekeeping operations in the Sahel, addressing the issue of illegal migration in the Mediterranean, providing political stability in the Balkans or taking action on instability in the Middle East and north Africa".
"British foreign policy interests are best served when working in concert with like-minded European partners" David Milliband argued. Further noting that, inside the EU, the UK would retain complete independence of action when it comes to defence, security, and foreign policy, since these can only be decided at EU level on the basis of unanimity. The UK is under no obligation to pursue any policy in these areas if it decides not to do so.
The current Brexit deal which will fail, and as has been presented to parliament, is the complete opposite of what the UK enjoys today. No longer represented in the corridors of power at the heart of European foreign policymaking, the UK will be relegated from the top tier of global decision-making to being a lesser power on the world stage.
The way out is, as argued in this petition and the many comments, is for Parliament to reject Article 50. Maybe another referendum is required to promote that but I fear outside interference as well as continuing lies from many of of the MPs in our ruling class could bias the result. Looks like the Labour Party has moved that way, at least with John McDonnell. Maybe he should be the new Labour leader and throw off the shackles of his boss' ancient philosophy?
