Close SUNY Binghamton until the coronavirus is less of a threat.
The Issue
Over 140 people were confirmed to be affected in the NYC area over the last two weeks, where many students from Binghamton reside. Students come all over Long Island, Westchester, NYC metro area. Letting students return from mid-winter break and spread the virus in Binghamton was already a big mistake that SUNYs decided to overlook. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/05/nyregion/coronavirus-new-york-cases.html
As of 5 days ago from 3/10/2020, around 3000 people were under quarantine and many schools around the tri-state area are closing. Private schools have more money to facilitate this type of move from in-class teaching to online classes. SUNY New Paltz just recently sent their students home yesterday (3/9).
Being a junior in biomedical engineering and seeing my professors (who study viruses and bacteria for a living) get paranoid about this COVID-19 thing proves that the issue needs to be taken more seriously by other departments and the administration as a whole.
If you agree that classes should be shifted to online software in order to protect students, faculty, and families (esp. old or young people who are more likely to contract the virus), then please sign this petition. This one is for those who spend their time within the large population of potentially sick students with no idea that they are currently spreading their virus.
Currently letting this spread is a huge problem so let us try to mitigate the number of students infected.
