Remove divisive signs posted by Sheriff from public property in Harris County, Georgia
0 have signed. Let’s get to 200!
The Sheriff of Harris County, Georgia continues to post signs on public land that sow seeds of division. The Sheriff's publically elected office is to promote and uphold the law, set the tone for justice and resolve disputes in the community. These signs are his personal views and should only be posted on his private land. These words do not represent all Harris County citizens and such signs should be welcoming to visitors of the community.
Text from current signs:
“This office fights discrimination in all forms, but we stand for the flag and kneel to pray. Sheriff Mike Jolley”
“Our citizens have concealed weapons. If you kill someone, we might kill you back. We have ONE jail and 356 cemeteries. Enjoy your stay! Sheriff Mike Jolley”
REMOVE OUR SHERIFF’S SIGNS FROM PUBLIC PROPERTY, ONE OF WHICH IS THREATENING, PROMOTES VIGILANTISM AND DIVISION. THE OTHER SIGN DISCOURAGES CITIZEN PROTEST, A RIGHT PROTECTED BY THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
WHY WE CARE:
Our Sheriff sets the tone for justice. We trust his department; we do not trust individuals with weapons to make decisions about shooting to kill in public. Encouraging vigilantism puts citizens who live and work here at risk. Our Sheriff has also chosen to set an unwelcoming tone for visitors. We choose to be inclusive and welcoming. He discourages citizens’ right to protest. These signs have been posted on public property, which indicate that these views are shared by the County as a whole, instead of the Sheriff's privately held views.
WHO THIS EFFECTS:
This affects every citizen in our diverse community as the signs sow seeds of division and distrust instead of unity. These negative signs impact commercial growth and tourism. They negatively influence the children of our community who are also citizens of the world.
We must speak out against such personal beliefs being posted by our elected Sheriff on public land. We ask that these signs be removed from public property and be replaced with a sign that represents all citizens of Harris County, such as "Welcome to Harris County."
