Publish Pete the Cat books in Spanish
The Issue
My prekindergarten classes in our school library LOVE Eric Litwin and James Dean's "Pete the Cat" series. They LOVE Pete's white shoes. They LOVE his groovy buttons. They are ROCKIN' in their school shoes and are happy that Pete SAVED CHRISTMAS after Santa got sick. They also enjoyed seeing their librarian (me) dressed up as Pete during our school's "Storybook Character Day" (see photo). Yet my Spanish-speaking students are unable to share Pete the Cat with their families because the book has not yet been translated into Spanish.
Research shows that when parents and caregivers read to their children, the kids learn to read and are engaged with books. Children also learn best when parents read to them in their primary language. Yet Pete the Cat remains monolingual.
With the discussion on diversity in children's books raging across the country, translations of English books into Spanish and other languages should also be in the mix. Our country's Spanish-speaking population is growing as are Pete the Cat's fans. Not having these books translated puts limits on what parents can read to their children and thus this becomes an access issue.
So HarperCollins, do the right thing and give Spanish-speaking children throughout the United States -- and the world -- the opportunity to share Pete the Cat and his "zapatos blancos" with their families.
