Harleys legacy- Regulate the Dog Training Industry

Harleys legacy- Regulate the Dog Training Industry
The Issue
My dog was abused by a TikTok dog trainer, a person who had a massive following on social media portraying an image of a professional. With their training methods being anything but gentle, my beloved pet suffered not just physical pain but also emotional distress, resulting in the worst outcome. Sadly Harley went to sleep and finally had peace on 17-04-25. Her mind was so broken that sadly Harley couldn’t be fixed even after months of support from other professionals and vets, their collective opinion was that the suffering for Harley wasn’t fair, and that we needed to let her rest. She was living in a high state of anxiety, reactive due to fear from the mistreatment. This wasn’t the life she deserved.
This heart-wrenching experience opened my eyes to the alarming lack of regulation in the dog training industry. I have come to learn that countless pet owners have faced similar situations at the hands of this man, with dogs being subjected to aggressive, harmful techniques without any accountability.
The dog training industry, worth billions, astonishingly operates in a largely unregulated manner. Anyone can brand themselves as a trainer without needing proper certification or adhering to standardized methods. This lack of oversight renders our pets vulnerable to mistreatment by individuals who may lack the necessary skills or qualifications. Professionals such as veterinarians, teachers, and therapists undergo rigorous training and certification; dog trainers should be no exception.
Countries like Sweden and Australia have already stepped up, implementing laws that protect animals by ensuring trainers are adequately qualified. The United States should follow suit, setting regulations that mandate credentials for trainers and imposing strict guidelines on training methods. Regulation could include a mandatory certification process, continuing education requirements, and a code of ethics that prioritizes animal welfare.
By regulating the industry, we not only protect our pets but also restore trust for pet owners who seek professional help. Enforcing standards will help eliminate unethical practitioners and promote techniques based on science and empathy, ultimately enhancing the bond between people and their pets.
This petition calls upon lawmakers, industry leaders, and animal welfare organizations to push for regulatory changes in the dog training industry. Our pets deserve better care and protection. Help us bring about this much-needed change to ensure a safer, more compassionate future for all dogs. Please sign this petition to catalyze action towards protecting our beloved companions.
