We met council officers recently who agreed with us, that there was nothing in this development that was of benefit to the Nature Reserve, the community or the users of the Walk. Nevertheless the process is far from complete and even though there was agreement, there is as yet no official commitment to uphold the protections in the covenants. That lack of a firm statement is frankly worrying. It is quite possible that there are attempts behind the scenes to make a deal. Councils are hard pressed for cash and are in a position to be tempted by offers of money or threats of legal appeals and other legal actions. It is imperative that we keep the petition going to impress on councillors who may be tempted to relax protections, regardless of fiscal pressures, that such a move could make them morally bankrupt. There are substantial numbers of people supporting this cause. An act that puts an individual's financial gain above the public that the council are elected to serve would be something we would pursue in the press vigorously. So please circulate this petition to all your contacts and ask them to join you in supporting green public spaces for all against the selfishness of a greedy individual.
