Change the Harford County Dress Code

Change the Harford County Dress Code

The Issue

The Harford County Public School dress code is sexist and outdated. The dress code policies are designed to shame and embarrass female students in specific. By forcing girls to change into there gym uniform its sending the message that it is the girls responsibility to make sure the male staff and students aren’t distracted. “shorts must reach the students fingertips when at there side”, this rule is completely outdated and an unreasonable expectation. Its 2021 and I can tell you for a fact that it’s impossible to find shorts that conform to this rule. “no spaghetti straps”, are we seriously sexualizing girls shoulders? “no jeans with rips above the knees” a simple rip in the jeans will not effect anyone’s ability to learn, and if it does, that isn’t the girls problem. At the time I have spent at Bel Air Middle School there have been many situations where I have witnessed first hand girls being shamed infront of the entire class simply because they were wearing spaghetti straps or jean shorts. I am not asking to be able to wear whatever I would like to school, I am simply asking to update our dress code and stop sexualizing teen girls body’s.
