The announcement of the plan to consolidate Southern Polytechnic State University and Kennesaw State University has been met with a wide array of emotions on Southern Poly's campus. Various expressions of anger, concern, apprehension, and uncertainty have been the rule, rather than the exception. The actions taken by the board are indicative of a decision making process more concerned with deceit and bottom-line economics than the responsibility with which you have been charged; the responsibility to provide high-quality learning environments for all of Georgia's college students.
We, the undersigned students, alumni, faculty, staff, administration, and supporters of Southern Polytechnic State University, are resolved to stop the proposed merger. We are dismayed by the closed-door, deceitful process through which the decision was made, and feel strongly that the cultures, identities, and missions of the two universities are incompatible. We ask for the immediate abandonment of the consolidation plan, and call for all future meetings regarding this issue to be both publicized and subject to comment. We are proud of our school, and will not stand by and watch it disappear in a flurry of bureaucratic dealings.
