The Issue

Hamilton needs modern hospitals

Hamilton’s hospitals are the backbone of our community, providing life-saving care when we need it most. But aging hospital buildings are making it harder for health care workers to do their jobs. It’s time for Hamilton to invest in the future of health care. It’s time to rebuild the oldest parts of Juravinski Hospital – and we need your help.

The need is urgent

The longer we wait, the farther we will fall behind.

Parts of the Juravinski Hospital are almost 100 years old. The Province of Ontario agrees that the oldest hospitals need to be replaced. But in order to get provincial investment, we need the City of Hamilton to financially commit to the project as well.

It takes a community to build a hospital

In Ontario, the provincial government covers 90% of the total construction costs. Every major hospital rebuild requires contribution from the local municipality, hospital and community fundraising to cover the remaining 10% of the construction costs, as well as 100% of furniture, fixtures and equipment (eg., beds, surgical equipment, stretchers, syringes, heart monitors, etc), and parking.

Cities across Ontario – like Burlington, Windsor, Niagara Region, Ottawa and others – have stepped up with funds to make sure hospitals in their communities get built. Without local commitment, the province could give their investment to another city, not Hamilton.

Your voice matters

By signing this petition, you’re sending a clear message that health care matters to Hamilton. A commitment today is an investment our community’s health tomorrow. It is a big decision, but the City’s support will make this project a reality.

Just think: 15 years from now, we could have a new and expanded hospital or one that is 115 years old. Which would you prefer?
