Halt the Unnecessary Euthanasia of Healthy, Adoptable Pets at Memphis Animal Service’s

The Issue

I am an animal lover and rescuer who firmly believes in the sanctity of life. The Memphis Animal Services in Tennessee has been conducting a practice that deeply disturbs me and many others. Since January this year, they have euthanized over 1000 dogs alone, not to mention countless other animals across all age groups, including newborns.
The Government is funding this shelter with millions of hard earned tax paying dollars and also supplying them with grants/tools they are not utilizing like the bus that has not moved to transport adoptable dogs to out of state shelters and humane societies that have reached out to assist!
There are cameras they refuse to turn on. There is also access to music to keep the animals calm they do not utilize.
Memphis Animal Services is constantly giving the public excuse after excuse to justify the killing of these babies. We in the animal rescue world are tired, we have no lives, our mental state is in jeopardy because all we do is beg and plead for their lives to be spared.

Killing 1 of the bonded pairs to free up space (no space made)

Killing Mamas and newborns. How do you find  a vein in a newborn( look up Tennessee legal euthanasia practices)

We have dogs coming out with signed by a vet spay/neuter certs that are not altered we have supplying proof from our vets to validate this (where are these spay/neuter funds going?)

Rescues have pregnant females going into labor almost immediately leaving Memphis Animal Service’s going by gestation period a lot of these dogs are getting pregnant at the shelter! Causing rescues to go bankrupt or struggling for the emergency unexpected funds.

They are killing dogs with adopters and fosters for those dogs in the lobby filling out paperwork this is not rescue this is not a safe haven!

Volunteers are afraid to stand up not because they don’t want to but in the past this shelter has banned them off the property or killed more dogs in retaliation!

Euthanasia can be a humane choice for animals that are suffering or beyond medical help. However, it is utterly unacceptable when used on healthy and adoptable pets who could have had a chance at life with loving families.

The shelter's actions are not only morally questionable but also go against the very essence of what an animal shelter should stand for - a safe haven for animals awaiting their forever homes.

We cannot continue to allow this senseless killing to occur under our watch. It's time we take action and demand change from the Memphis Animal Service’s .

We call upon local government officials and animal welfare organizations to investigate these practices thoroughly and ensure that every healthy pet gets its fair chance at adoption instead of being prematurely put down.

For those innocent lives lost and those still at risk, we must raise our voices now! We are mad, we are tired, but most importantly - we demand change! Please sign this petition today to stop the unnecessary killing of healthy adoptable pets at the Memphis Animal Service’s!

We realize a huge problem are the citizens that is leading to the problem addressed above and believe that everyone has a hand in this. I have talked to several Rescues and the following are things we believe will help control the issues at hand. They are as follows.

  1. We need state mandatory spay/neuter laws for animals to help control the over whelming population that is completely out of control statewide. The laws should be the same and not different per county. These laws need to be enforced to the full existent of the law. All animals picked up or relinquished should be spay/neutered, vaccinated and chipped before leaving the shelter unless released to a rescue who then will be liable for providing these services before any animal is adopted.
  2. For replicable breeders a license should be obtained by the state yearly and vet records/proof of health should be rendered to the state per litter. We request the state to do inspections to insure that all living conditions are suitable, and safe for the animals. We ask backyard breeding to be prohibited and those that break the law should face fines and said animals to be altered.
  3. Tennessee law refers to animals as Owned Property we request that be changed to Owned Living Property they deserve a legal status protecting them from abuse, torture, malice, neglect and cruelty. All those that break this law and found guilty should suffer at the full extent of the law, and prohibited to own any animal from that day forward. We ask the state for said person to be registered as a animal abuser yearly. We ask for the state to pass this law to ensure shelters and rescues report these individuals to the state for a full investigation, if the law is not enforced we ask fines to be placed against them.

We are their voice and we are demanding to be heard!
